Why Is My Dog So Itchy?

Constant scratching can mean a lot of things, but it’s rarely something to brush off. Here’s what might be going on with your dog’s skin, and how the right food could make all the difference.

Constant scratching isn’t something to ignore. Skin irritation is one of the most common health concerns in dogs, and getting to the bottom of it starts with knowing what to look for.

The good news? Understanding the cause is the first step to finding relief.

What causes itching in dogs?

There’s rarely just one answer, but the most common culprits are:

  • Environmental allergies. Pollen, grass, dust mites and mould can all trigger itching in sensitive dogs. If the scratching gets worse at certain times of year, this could be the reason.
  • Flea allergy dermatitis. Some dogs aren’t just irritated by fleas, they’re actually allergic to flea saliva. Even a single bite can set off intense itching that lasts days.
  • Food sensitivities. This one is often overlooked. Dogs can develop reactions to certain protein sources, particularly those they’ve eaten repeatedly over a long period of time. Common triggers include beef and chicken.
  • Dry or irritated skin. Poor diet, harsh shampoos or low humidity can all strip moisture from your dog’s skin, leading to flaking and itch.

How does food play a role?

Quite a significant one, as it turns out. A dog’s skin and coat depend heavily on the quality of what’s in their bowl. Diets high in artificial additives, low quality protein or seed oils can aggravate sensitivities and make inflammation worse.

On the flip side, meals rich in omega 3 fatty acids actively help reduce inflammation and support a healthy skin barrier from the inside out.

Could a protein switch help?

If you suspect food sensitivity, switching to a novel protein your dog hasn’t eaten before can make a real difference. Kangaroo and salmon are two of the best options, as they’re less commonly used in everyday dog food, making reactions far less likely.

Nutri-Mate: Gentle nutrition for sensitive dogs

Nutri-Mate’s Kangaroo, Rice and Vegetable Rolls, and Salmon, Rice and Vegetable Rolls are ideal for dogs with sensitivities. Both contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Our Salmon roll is also rich in omega 3, which supports healthy skin and a shiny coat from within.

As always, if your dog’s itching is severe or persistent, a visit to your vet is always a good idea.
