When it comes to choosing the best food for your dog, it’s all about ensuring they get the right nutrients for excellent health.

Let’s look at how to guarantee your fur baby is fed what they need!

  • Assessing nutritional needs

When deciding what the ideal food is for your dog, it’s important to consider their:

Age. Puppies need more protein, energy and certain nutrients than adult dogs.

Breed / weight. Larger dogs will need to eat more than smaller ones.

Activity level. Dogs that exercise more will need more food.

Reproductive status. Pregnant or nursing dogs will need more calories. Spayed and neutered dogs will need less.

Overall health. If your dog is overweight, they’ll need less calories. Underweight dogs will need more.

  • Assessing the food

Evaluating what’s in the food you’re considering is critical as there are many products on the market, and not all are created equal.

  • Look for quality ingredients that will help support your fur baby’s body. The first few ingredients listed should be protein and carbohydrate sources (ie. different types of meats, fish and grains). Fresh ingredients like fibre-rich vegetables can help boost your dog’s energy, maintain a shiny coat, support muscle health, and support cognitive function.
  • Choose a balanced dog food that’s a complete meal solution as this means it’s been carefully formulated to meet your pup’s needs. Better yet, ensure it meets the standards set out in the Association of American Feed Control’s dog nutrient profiles.
  • Ensure the product has enough essential vitamins and minerals. Omega 3 fatty acids, thiamine and taurine are super important for healthy coats, eye and muscle health.
  • Avoid foods with preservatives, additives, seed oils and gums as these may cause skin issues and allergies.
  • Choose foods formulated by experts. DIY food may sound like a good idea but planning meals that provide dogs with adequate nutrition is difficult.
