Most dog owners would say they’d know if their pet was carrying extra weight. The truth is most of us don’t. Sydney vet Dr Anne Quain calls it “weight blindness”, where the kilos creep on so gradually that they simply become the new normal. It’s a real and common phenomenon, and a peer-reviewed study of Australian veterinary practices backs it up, finding that well over 40 per cent of dogs examined were overweight or obese.
It’s easy to see how it happens. A few extra biscuits here, a bit of leftover roast there, and cuddly slowly tips into carrying real health risk. The Pet Food Industry Association of Australia points to the same two culprits time and again: eating more energy than the dog burns off, and simply not getting enough exercise to balance it out. Extra weight has been linked to joint problems, insulin resistance and a shorter lifespan overall.
The good news is that managing it doesn’t mean skimping on quality or leaving your dog feeling short-changed at dinner time. It means being more deliberate about what goes into the bowl. That’s exactly where our Trim roll comes in. Made with real ingredients and formulated to be lower in fat, Trim gives dogs a genuinely satisfying meal. No need to compromise on nutrition to manage portion control.
If you’re not sure whether your dog needs it, start simple. Can you feel their ribs easily without pressing hard? Does the tummy tuck up behind the rib cage rather than hanging level? If the answer’s no on either count, it might be worth a chat with your vet and a look at what’s really going into their bowl.
Small changes now can mean many more years of walks together.
